#laptop#performance#windows
✓ Accepted Answer

A slow laptop usually comes down to five common causes: too many startup programs, a nearly full or failing hard drive, insufficient RAM, malware, or overheating from dust. Work through them in order. First, open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc), sort by CPU and Memory, and note what's consuming resources. Disable heavy startup apps under the Startup tab. Second, check your drive: if it's a mechanical HDD and more than ~85% full, that alone causes major slowdowns — free up space or upgrade to an SSD. Third, if you have only 4GB RAM, upgrading to 8GB or 16GB is the single most cost-effective speed boost. Fourth, run a full malware scan. Fifth, if the laptop is hot and the fan is loud, internal dust is throttling the CPU — a professional cleaning restores performance. In Sri Lanka's humid, dusty climate, we recommend an internal clean every 12–18 months.

▲ 12

The SSD upgrade made the biggest difference for me — my 2017 laptop feels new again.

▲ 8

Adding an SSD + going from 4GB to 8GB RAM is the classic combo. Under LKR 25,000 total and worth every rupee.

#laptop#buying#budget
✓ Accepted Answer

Under LKR 200,000 (roughly USD 600–650), prioritise these specs over brand: a recent-generation Intel Core i5/i7 or AMD Ryzen 5/7 CPU, 16GB RAM (or 8GB you can upgrade), a 512GB SSD, and a Full HD (1920×1080) IPS display. At this budget in Sri Lanka you'll find strong options from Asus (VivoBook/Zenbook), Acer (Aspire/Swift), Lenovo (IdeaPad Slim), and HP (Pavilion). For students and office work, an 8GB/512GB Ryzen 5 machine is ideal. For light content creation, stretch to 16GB RAM. Avoid laptops still shipping with only a mechanical HDD or 4GB soldered RAM. Buy from authorised dealers (Unity Plaza, Liberty Plaza, or official brand stores) so you get a valid Sri Lanka warranty, and confirm the warranty is local, not international-only.

▲ 9

16GB RAM should be the minimum in 2025 if you keep many browser tabs open.

▲ 6

Always confirm it's a local warranty — grey-market units are cheaper but you lose service cover.

#windows#boot#troubleshooting
✓ Accepted Answer

When Windows fails to boot after an update, use the built-in recovery environment before assuming data loss. Force Windows into the Recovery Environment by powering off during boot three times in a row — on the third restart it opens 'Automatic Repair'. From there choose Advanced options → Troubleshoot. Try, in order: (1) Startup Repair, which fixes most boot-loader problems automatically; (2) Uninstall the latest quality or feature update under Advanced options → Uninstall Updates; (3) System Restore if you have a restore point; (4) Boot into Safe Mode (Startup Settings → 4) to remove a bad driver. If none work, boot from a Windows USB and run 'bootrec /rebuildbcd', 'bootrec /fixmbr', and 'bootrec /fixboot' from Command Prompt. Your files remain intact in all of these steps. Only consider a reset as a last resort, and choose 'Keep my files'.

▲ 14

The three-forced-restarts trick to reach Automatic Repair is a lifesaver — most people don't know it.

▲ 5

If it's a driver issue, Safe Mode + Device Manager rollback usually does it.

#repair#cost#pricing
✓ Accepted Answer

Laptop repair pricing in Sri Lanka depends on the fault. As a general guide: software issues (OS reinstall, virus removal, tune-up) typically run LKR 2,500–6,000; RAM or SSD upgrades are labour LKR 1,500–3,000 plus the part; a keyboard or battery replacement is LKR 6,000–18,000 depending on model; screen replacements range LKR 12,000–40,000+ depending on panel size and resolution; and motherboard-level (chip) repairs vary widely from LKR 8,000 to 30,000+. Diagnostics are often free or credited toward the repair. Always ask for a written quote after diagnosis, insist on genuine or grade-A parts, and get a workmanship warranty (30–90 days is standard). IT BOY offers same-day diagnostics and transparent fixed quotes across Colombo and Maharagama.

▲ 7

Always get the quote in writing before approving — avoids surprises.

▲ 4

Genuine parts cost a bit more but last far longer, especially screens and batteries.

#virus#malware#security
✓ Accepted Answer

To remove malware safely, work in this order. First, disconnect from the internet to stop data exfiltration and further downloads. Second, boot into Safe Mode with Networking (hold Shift while clicking Restart → Troubleshoot → Advanced → Startup Settings → 5). Third, run a full scan with Windows Defender (it's genuinely strong now) and a second-opinion scanner like Malwarebytes Free. Fourth, remove suspicious programs via Settings → Apps, and check browser extensions. Fifth, reset your browsers and clear the hosts file if redirects persist. After cleaning, change your important passwords from a different, trusted device — especially email and banking. If the machine shows ransomware (encrypted files with ransom notes), do not pay; disconnect it and seek professional help, as some strains are decryptable. Keep real-time protection on and Windows updated to prevent reinfection.

▲ 11

Malwarebytes + Defender together catch almost everything. Don't run two real-time AVs though.

▲ 8

Changing passwords from a CLEAN device afterwards is the step everyone forgets.

#ssd#hdd#storage
✓ Accepted Answer

Choose an SSD for your operating system and applications, and optionally add an HDD only for bulk cold storage. An SSD (solid-state drive) has no moving parts, so it's 5–10× faster than a mechanical HDD for boot times, app loading, and file access — a Windows boot drops from ~60 seconds to under 15. SSDs are also more durable against knocks (important for laptops) and silent. HDDs remain cheaper per terabyte, so they still make sense for archiving large video libraries or backups where speed doesn't matter. For any modern computer, an NVMe SSD for the OS is the single biggest performance upgrade you can make. A practical Sri Lankan setup: a 500GB–1TB NVMe SSD as the main drive, plus a 1–2TB HDD if you store lots of media.

▲ 6

NVMe over SATA SSD if your motherboard supports it — even faster.

▲ 5

I keep a small SSD for Windows and a big HDD for my photo archive. Best of both.

Networking

#wifi#router#speed
✓ Accepted Answer

Slow Wi-Fi usually stems from router placement, congestion, outdated hardware, or your ISP plan — not the laptop. Start by testing your actual speed at speedtest.net near the router, then in the slow room. If it's fast near the router but slow elsewhere, it's a coverage/placement issue: move the router to a central, elevated, open position away from walls, metal, and microwaves. Switch to the 5GHz band for nearby devices (faster, less congested) and keep 2.4GHz for range. Change the Wi-Fi channel to a less crowded one (1, 6, or 11 on 2.4GHz). Reboot the router monthly and keep its firmware updated. If your home is large or has thick walls, a mesh Wi-Fi system or an access point beats a single router. Finally, confirm your Dialog/SLT/Hutch plan actually delivers the speed you expect — a 21Mbps package can't give you 100Mbps no matter the router.

▲ 9

Mesh changed everything in my two-storey house. Single router just couldn't cover it.

▲ 4

5GHz for devices near the router, 2.4GHz for the far rooms. Simple but effective.

#printer#troubleshooting
✓ Accepted Answer

When a printer won't print, work through the chain from software to hardware. First, check the obvious: power, paper, ink/toner levels, and that no cover or paper jam is flagged. Second, on the computer open Settings → Printers, confirm the correct printer is set as default and not showing 'Offline' or 'Paused' — right-click to resume. Third, clear the print queue (cancel all stuck jobs) and restart the Print Spooler service (services.msc → Print Spooler → Restart). Fourth, for USB printers try a different cable/port; for Wi-Fi printers confirm the printer and computer are on the same network. Fifth, reinstall the printer driver from the manufacturer's site rather than relying on a generic one. For inkjets that print blank pages, run the printhead cleaning cycle 2–3 times; dried ink is common in Sri Lanka's climate if the printer sits unused.

▲ 10

Restarting the Print Spooler service fixes 'stuck queue' problems 9 times out of 10.

▲ 6

For inkjets, print at least one page weekly to stop the heads drying out.

For most home users, Windows Defender (built into Windows 10/11) is genuinely sufficient — it scores at or near the top in independent AV-TEST results and costs nothing. Pair it with safe browsing habits and Malwarebytes Free for occasional second-opinion scans. For businesses, invest in a managed endpoint security solution (Bitdefender GravityZone, ESET PROTECT, or Sophos) because they add central management, ransomware rollback, web filtering, and reporting across all company devices — features Defender alone doesn't centralise. Avoid running two real-time antivirus products at once; they conflict and slow the machine. Whatever you choose, the biggest security wins are keeping Windows updated, using strong unique passwords with a password manager, enabling two-factor authentication, and maintaining offline backups.

▲ 8

Defender + good habits beats an expensive suite used carelessly.

For our office we moved to Bitdefender GravityZone — central dashboard is worth it for 10+ PCs.

#overheating#cooling#laptop
✓ Accepted Answer

Overheating is caused by blocked airflow, dust-clogged fans, dried thermal paste, or heavy sustained load. Immediate steps: ensure vents aren't blocked (never use a laptop on a bed or cushion), and use it on a hard flat surface or a cooling pad. Monitor temperatures with a free tool like HWMonitor — sustained CPU temps above 90°C under load indicate a cooling problem. The most common fix in Sri Lanka's dusty environment is a professional internal cleaning plus fresh thermal paste on the CPU/GPU, which can drop temperatures 15–25°C. For desktops, add case fans and maintain good cable management for airflow. If overheating started suddenly, check that all fans still spin. Chronic throttling shortens component life, so don't ignore it. A clean + repaste every 12–18 months is good preventive maintenance here.

▲ 12

Repaste + clean dropped my gaming laptop from 95°C to 78°C. Huge difference.

Building a gaming PC in Sri Lanka is very doable — buy parts from Unity Plaza, Barclays, or Nano/redline-type stores and compare online. Allocate budget by priority: GPU (~35%), CPU (~20%), then motherboard, RAM, SSD, PSU, and case. A solid 1080p build in 2025 pairs an AMD Ryzen 5 or Intel Core i5 with an RTX 4060 or RX 7600, 16GB DDR4/DDR5, a 1TB NVMe SSD, and a quality 550–650W 80+ Bronze power supply. Never cheap out on the PSU — a poor unit can damage everything. Confirm CPU/motherboard socket compatibility and RAM support before buying. Budget around LKR 350,000–500,000 for a strong 1080p rig; less if you buy a previous-gen GPU. Buy the PSU, motherboard, and storage new with warranty even if you economise elsewhere.

▲ 11

Don't skimp on the PSU — learned that the expensive way.

Website cost in Sri Lanka depends on type and complexity. As a 2025 guide: a professional single-page or small business website typically runs LKR 40,000–120,000; a multi-page corporate site with CMS is LKR 120,000–350,000; an e-commerce store with payments and inventory ranges LKR 200,000–600,000+; and custom web applications are quoted per scope. On top of the build, budget recurring costs: a domain (~LKR 4,000–6,000/year for .lk or .com), hosting (LKR 12,000–60,000/year depending on traffic), and optional maintenance. Beware quotes that seem too cheap — they often use nulled themes, no SEO, and no support. A good site is an asset that generates leads, so prioritise mobile speed, SEO structure, and conversion design over price alone. IT BOY provides fixed written quotes after understanding your goals.

Cheap sites cost more long-term when you rebuild them properly. Do it right once.

#seo#local-seo#google
✓ Accepted Answer

Effective local SEO for a Sri Lankan business rests on four pillars. First, claim and fully optimise your Google Business Profile — accurate name, address, phone, categories, hours, photos, and regular posts; this drives Maps visibility and 'near me' searches. Second, get your on-page basics right: a unique title and meta description per page, one clear H1, fast mobile loading, and content that names your services and locations naturally (e.g. 'IT support in Maharagama'). Third, build local relevance with location and service pages, genuine customer reviews, and citations in Sri Lankan directories. Fourth, earn topical authority by publishing helpful content answering real customer questions — exactly like this Knowledge Hub. Track results in Google Search Console. SEO compounds over months, so consistency beats one-off bursts. Avoid buying spammy backlinks; they cause more harm than good.

#google-business#local-seo#maps
✓ Accepted Answer

Google Maps ranking is driven by relevance, distance, and prominence. To maximise all three: complete every field of your Business Profile — correct primary category (and relevant secondary categories), precise pin location, local phone number, website, and full opening hours. Add high-quality photos of your premises, team, and work, and refresh them regularly. Post updates weekly (offers, news, tips) since active profiles rank better. Collect genuine reviews steadily and reply to every one — volume, recency, and your responses all count. Ensure your Name-Address-Phone (NAP) is identical everywhere online. Add your service areas and services with descriptions. For businesses serving specific towns, create matching location content on your website. Consistency and steady review growth beat any one-time trick.

▲ 8

Replying to reviews (even short 'thank you') genuinely helps ranking + trust.

Start small, learn, then scale. For a Sri Lankan small business, a sensible starting budget is LKR 1,500–3,000 per day (roughly LKR 45,000–90,000/month) for one clear objective — usually messages/leads or website conversions. Spend the first 1–2 weeks in learning mode: test 2–3 audiences and 3–4 creatives, then cut what underperforms and put budget behind winners. Don't judge results in the first three days while the algorithm is still learning. Track cost per result (cost per lead or per purchase), not vanity metrics like likes. Ensure your landing page or WhatsApp response is fast, or you'll waste ad spend. As you find profitable campaigns, scale budget gradually (20–30% increases) to avoid resetting the learning phase. Creative quality matters more than budget — a great video ad on a small budget beats a weak ad on a big one.

▲ 10

Cost per lead is the only number that matters early on. Ignore likes.

Scale winners slowly — big sudden budget jumps reset the learning phase.

Focus on AI tools that save time on real tasks rather than novelty. For content and admin: ChatGPT or Claude for drafting emails, proposals, product descriptions, and social captions. For design: Canva's AI features for quick graphics and Adobe Firefly for image work. For customer service: a well-configured chatbot on your website or WhatsApp Business auto-replies to handle FAQs. For marketing: Meta's built-in Advantage+ AI for ad targeting and creative variations. For meetings: transcription tools like Otter or the built-in AI notes in Teams/Zoom. For AI video: tools that turn scripts into promotional videos (a service IT BOY offers). The key is to pick one or two, integrate them into a daily workflow, and measure the hours saved — not to chase every new tool. Always review AI output before it reaches customers; treat it as a fast first draft, not a final word.

AI video generation turns text prompts, scripts, or images into finished video using machine-learning models. Modern workflows combine several AI capabilities: text-to-video for generating scenes, AI voiceover for narration, automatic captions, and AI-assisted editing for pacing and music. For advertising this is powerful because it dramatically cuts production time and cost — a promotional or product video that once needed a film crew can be produced in days. It's especially good for social media ad variations, product showcases, and explainer videos where you need many versions to test. The trade-off: fully-AI video still benefits from human creative direction for brand consistency, accurate messaging, and polish. The best results blend AI generation with professional editing and a clear script. IT BOY produces AI-powered promotional and ad videos for Sri Lankan brands this way, balancing speed with quality.

Branding

#branding#logo#mistakes
✓ Accepted Answer

The most damaging branding mistakes are inconsistency and copying competitors. Common errors: (1) Using different logos, colours, or fonts across your website, social media, and print — inconsistency erodes trust and recognition. (2) A low-resolution or clip-art logo that looks unprofessional at small sizes. (3) No clear brand message — customers can't tell what makes you different. (4) Choosing trendy fonts/colours that date quickly instead of timeless ones. (5) Ignoring how the brand looks on mobile and in dark mode. (6) No brand guidelines, so every new designer reinvents the look. Fix these by creating a simple brand kit: a proper vector logo, 2–3 core colours with hex codes, one or two fonts, and a one-line brand message. Consistency across every touchpoint is what turns a business into a recognisable brand. IT BOY builds complete brand identity systems for exactly this reason.

Consistency is underrated. Same logo, colours, fonts everywhere = instant professionalism.

A professional email uses your own domain (you@yourbusiness.lk) instead of a free gmail.com address — it builds instant credibility. To set it up: first register your domain if you haven't. Then choose an email provider: Google Workspace and Microsoft 365 are the two leading options, both around USD 6/user/month, giving you reliable email plus calendar, storage, and document tools. Cheaper option: many Sri Lankan hosting plans include domain email at no extra cost, though with fewer features. During setup you'll add DNS records (MX for mail routing, plus SPF, DKIM, and DMARC for security and deliverability) — these authentication records are essential so your emails don't land in spam. For a team, Workspace/365 is worth it for the collaboration tools and superior spam filtering. Always enable two-factor authentication on business email, as it's a prime target for attackers.

Follow the 3-2-1 backup rule: keep 3 copies of your data, on 2 different types of media, with 1 copy off-site (cloud). In practice for a small business: your live data on your work devices/server (copy 1), an automated local backup to a NAS or external drive (copy 2), and an automated cloud backup off-site (copy 3). For cloud, options include Google Workspace/Microsoft 365 built-in storage, Backblaze, or Wasabi for larger volumes. Automate everything — manual backups get forgotten. Critically, test your restores periodically; a backup you've never restored is a hope, not a plan. Protect against ransomware by keeping at least one backup versioned and offline/immutable, so encrypted files can't overwrite your good copies. For Sri Lankan businesses with unreliable power, a UPS plus automated cloud sync protects against both outages and hardware failure.

A reliable small-office network starts with the right backbone. Use a business-grade router (not a basic home unit) connected to your ISP. For anything beyond a few users, run wired Gigabit Ethernet to desks via a network switch — it's faster and more stable than Wi-Fi for fixed workstations. Add Wi-Fi access points for laptops and phones, positioned for full coverage rather than relying on the router's built-in radio. Separate your network into a staff network and a guest network so visitors never touch internal systems. Use static IPs or DHCP reservations for printers and servers. Protect everything with a UPS on the router, switch, and any server. For security, change all default passwords, keep firmware updated, and consider a business firewall for internet-facing services. Label your cables and document the setup — future troubleshooting becomes far easier. IT BOY designs and installs office networks across Colombo and Maharagama.

Before installing CCTV, plan coverage and quality first. Identify the key points to monitor — entrances, cash areas, driveways, blind spots — and choose camera positions that cover them without gaps. For image quality, 4MP or higher cameras are the current sweet spot; 2MP/1080p is the minimum for usable footage. Decide between IP cameras (higher quality, network-based, more flexible) and analogue HD (cheaper, simpler). Ensure adequate night vision (IR range matched to the distance) and weatherproofing (IP66+) for outdoor units in Sri Lanka's rain. Storage matters: size your NVR/DVR and hard drive for the number of cameras and how many days of footage you want to retain (a typical setup keeps 15–30 days). Add a UPS so recording survives power cuts. For remote viewing, ensure the system supports secure mobile access — and change default passwords, as unsecured CCTV is a known hacking target. Professional installation ensures proper cabling, angles, and configuration.

▲ 10

Change the default CCTV password immediately — hacked cameras are a real problem.

Often yes, depending on the failure type — but your first actions matter enormously. If the drive is making clicking or grinding noises, STOP using it immediately and don't try DIY tools; that's a physical/mechanical failure and continued power can destroy the platters permanently. Power it off and consult a professional data recovery service with a clean-room facility. If the drive is still detected but files are corrupted or the partition is 'RAW' (a logical failure), recovery software like Recuva, PhotoRec, or R-Studio can often retrieve files — always recover TO a different drive, never onto the failing one. For accidentally deleted files, stop writing to that drive at once to avoid overwriting them, then run recovery software. Prevention beats recovery: maintain automated backups (see the 3-2-1 rule). SSDs are harder to recover than HDDs once failed, which is another reason backups are essential. IT BOY offers data recovery diagnostics across Sri Lanka.

A NAS (Network Attached Storage) is a smart investment once your team needs shared files, central backup, or private cloud access. It's essentially your own storage server on the office network. Benefits: centralised file sharing so everyone works from one source of truth; automated backups of all staff computers to one place; private cloud access to your files from anywhere without monthly per-user cloud fees; and RAID redundancy so a single drive failure doesn't lose data. Popular brands are Synology and QNAP, which offer user-friendly software, apps, and features like versioning and snapshots (useful against ransomware). Size it with room to grow and always use RAID (RAID 1 or better) — but remember RAID is not a backup; still keep an off-site/cloud copy per the 3-2-1 rule. For a small team handling lots of documents, media, or design files, a NAS pays for itself quickly versus recurring cloud storage costs.

#passwords#security#2fa
✓ Accepted Answer

Account security comes down to a few high-impact habits. First, use a password manager (Bitwarden, 1Password) so every account has a long, unique password you don't have to remember — password reuse is the number-one cause of breaches. Second, enable two-factor authentication (2FA) everywhere, especially email, banking, and social/ad accounts; an authenticator app is safer than SMS. Third, secure your email above all — it's the master key that resets every other account. Fourth, train staff to recognise phishing: check sender addresses, don't click unexpected links, and verify payment-change requests by phone. Fifth, keep devices updated and running endpoint protection. Sixth, limit admin access and remove accounts of departed staff promptly. Finally, maintain offline backups so ransomware can't hold you hostage. These basics stop the vast majority of attacks — most breaches exploit weak passwords and missing 2FA, not sophisticated hacking.

2FA on your email first. If they get your email, they get everything.

Several free tweaks noticeably speed up Windows 11. Disable unnecessary startup apps (Task Manager → Startup). Turn off visual effects you don't need (search 'Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows' → Adjust for best performance, or keep a few). Free up disk space with Storage Sense and by uninstalling unused programs. Ensure Windows and drivers are updated — updates often improve performance and security. Disable background apps that don't need to run (Settings → Apps → installed apps → advanced options). Run 'Disk Cleanup' and clear temp files. If you're on an HDD, the single biggest free-ish win is cloning to an SSD. Also check for malware, which silently steals performance. Avoid so-called 'PC booster' or registry-cleaner apps — they rarely help and sometimes cause problems. Windows 11 runs well on modest hardware once startup bloat and malware are cleared.

For a slow Mac, start with these steps. Open Activity Monitor and check CPU and Memory tabs for apps consuming resources — quit or uninstall the worst offenders. Manage startup items under System Settings → General → Login Items. Free up storage: macOS slows down when the drive is nearly full, so use System Settings → General → Storage to offload large files and empty caches. Restart periodically — Macs left sleeping for weeks accumulate memory pressure. Update macOS, as updates fix performance bugs. Reset the SMC/NVRAM on Intel Macs if you have hardware-ish quirks (Apple Silicon Macs manage this automatically). If you have an older Intel Mac with a mechanical drive or fusion drive, upgrading to an SSD transforms it. Check that you're not running too many browser tabs and heavy extensions. Avoid third-party 'Mac cleaner' apps that over-promise; the built-in tools plus good storage hygiene handle most cases.

For beginners, Ubuntu or Linux Mint are the best starting points. Ubuntu is the most popular desktop Linux — huge community, extensive documentation, and almost any problem you hit has an existing solution online. Linux Mint is even friendlier for Windows switchers because its Cinnamon desktop feels familiar (taskbar, start menu, system tray) and it's lightweight enough to revive older PCs. Both are free, stable, and come with an app store for easy software installation. Start by trying the 'live USB' mode — boot from a USB stick to test Linux without touching your existing system. If you want to keep Windows too, you can dual-boot. For very old or low-spec machines, Linux Mint XFCE or Lubuntu run smoothly where Windows would crawl. Once comfortable, you can explore Fedora, Pop!_OS, or others. Avoid Arch or Gentoo as a first distro — they're powerful but steep learning curves.

#windows#activation#licensing
✓ Accepted Answer

Yes, for any business and recommended for individuals. A genuine Windows license gets you security updates, official support, no watermark or feature restrictions, and legal compliance — important if you're a registered business or might be audited. Pirated or 'cracked' activations often come bundled with malware, can break after updates, and lock you out of certain features. Genuine licenses are more affordable than many assume, especially OEM keys that come pre-installed on new laptops, or Windows 11 Home/Pro retail licenses. For businesses, volume licensing or Microsoft 365 subscriptions (which can include Windows) offer manageable per-user pricing plus Office apps. If cost is the concern, note that Windows 11 will run unactivated with a watermark and some personalisation locked, but you still get security updates — however for business use, proper licensing avoids legal and malware risks entirely.

Think of it this way: your domain is your address (yourbusiness.lk), and hosting is the land your website's files sit on. You need both. A domain is registered yearly — .com is global and familiar, while .lk signals a Sri Lankan business and is managed by the LK Domain Registry. Hosting types, from cheapest to most powerful: shared hosting (fine for small sites, resources shared with others), VPS (dedicated slice, more control and speed), and cloud hosting (scalable, pay for what you use). For most small business sites, quality shared or entry cloud hosting is plenty. Choose a host with SSD storage, good uptime (99.9%+), free SSL certificates, daily backups, and responsive support. For Sri Lankan audiences, a host with servers or CDN nodes near the region improves speed. Avoid the very cheapest hosts that oversell — slow, unreliable hosting hurts SEO and user experience. A Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) means Windows hit a critical error and stopped to protect itself. The most common causes are faulty drivers, failing RAM, disk errors, overheating, or recently installed hardware/software. To diagnose: note the stop code shown on the blue screen (e.g. MEMORY_MANAGEMENT, IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL) — it points to the cause. Steps: (1) If it started after a recent driver/update/app, undo that change or use System Restore. (2) Update or roll back drivers, especially graphics and storage. (3) Test your RAM with Windows Memory Diagnostic — bad RAM is a frequent culprit. (4) Run 'chkdsk /f' and 'sfc /scannow' to fix disk and system-file corruption. (5) Check temperatures; overheating causes crashes. (6) If BSODs are random and frequent, failing RAM or a failing drive is likely — back up immediately. Occasional single BSODs happen; frequent ones need investigation.

Both daily runtime and long-term battery health can be improved. For longer runtime per charge: lower screen brightness, enable battery saver mode, close background apps, disconnect unused peripherals, and use the balanced/efficiency power plan. For long-term battery health (so it holds capacity for years): avoid keeping it at 100% while plugged in constantly — many laptops now offer a charge limit (e.g. 80%) in their settings or BIOS, which greatly extends lifespan. Avoid draining to 0% regularly; lithium batteries prefer staying between about 20% and 80%. Keep the laptop cool, as heat degrades batteries fastest — a real factor in Sri Lanka's climate. If your battery already drains quickly and shows high 'wear level' (check with a battery report: 'powercfg /batteryreport'), it may need replacement. Screen flickering or lines can be software or hardware. First rule out software: update your graphics driver (or roll it back if flickering started after an update), and check the refresh rate settings. A quick test: gently move the screen/lid — if the flicker changes with the hinge angle, it's likely a loose or damaged display cable (fixable). Another test: connect an external monitor. If the external display is perfect but the laptop screen isn't, the problem is the laptop's panel or cable, not the graphics chip. If lines or artifacts appear on BOTH the laptop screen and external monitor, the graphics chip (GPU) may be failing. Vertical/horizontal fixed lines usually indicate a physical panel fault needing screen replacement. Flickering only in certain apps points to software/driver issues. IT BOY diagnoses display faults and replaces panels/cables across Colombo and Maharagama.

Yes, this is usually repairable. First try software fixes: restart, check you haven't accidentally enabled a filter/sticky keys setting, and update or reinstall the keyboard driver in Device Manager. Test in a different app to rule out an application issue. If specific keys are physically dead: for a few keys, dust/debris or a damaged key mechanism may be the cause — careful cleaning sometimes helps. If liquid was spilled, that's a common cause of key failure and needs prompt professional attention before corrosion spreads. For widespread key failure, the fix is usually a keyboard replacement, which on most laptops is an affordable, straightforward part swap. As a stopgap, a USB or Bluetooth external keyboard works perfectly. Don't ignore spill damage — the liquid can reach the motherboard. IT BOY replaces laptop keyboards with genuine or grade-A parts.

It depends which kind of VPN you mean. A business/remote-access VPN lets staff securely connect to your office network or systems from home or on the road, encrypting the connection so data can't be intercepted — genuinely useful if employees access internal servers, files, or systems remotely. A consumer VPN (NordVPN, etc.) encrypts your internet traffic and hides your IP, useful on public Wi-Fi and for privacy, but it's not the same as securing your business systems. For most small businesses, the priorities are: use a remote-access VPN or secure cloud tools if staff work remotely; always use a VPN or mobile data (never open public Wi-Fi unprotected) when handling sensitive work; and combine VPN with strong passwords and 2FA rather than relying on it alone. A VPN encrypts the connection but doesn't stop malware or phishing, so treat it as one layer of a broader security setup.

WordPress powers a large share of the web and is a solid choice for many businesses — but it depends on your needs. Strengths: flexible, huge plugin ecosystem, easy content editing once set up, good for blogs and content-heavy sites, and generally SEO-friendly. It's cost-effective and you're not locked to one agency. Considerations: WordPress needs ongoing maintenance — updates to core, themes, and plugins are essential for security, as outdated WordPress sites are a common hacking target. Too many plugins can slow it down. For simple brochure sites, a well-built custom or lightweight solution can be faster and lower-maintenance. For online stores, WordPress with WooCommerce works well but a dedicated e-commerce build may scale better. The key is professional setup: quality hosting, a lightweight theme, only necessary plugins, security hardening, and regular backups. A poorly maintained WordPress site causes more problems than it solves — so budget for upkeep or a maintenance plan.

Keep plugins minimal and updated. Bloated WP sites are slow and get hacked.

They overlap but AEO adds specific practices: write answer-first content where the opening sentence directly answers the question; use clear question-style headings (exactly like this Knowledge Hub); provide concise, factual, self-contained explanations AI can lift verbatim; add structured data (FAQ, Q&A, Article schema); and build entity clarity so AI knows who you are and why you're credible. As people increasingly ask AI assistants instead of clicking blue links, AEO protects and grows your visibility. It doesn't replace SEO — it extends it. A well-structured, genuinely helpful, schema-marked page tends to perform well in both.

Answer-first writing is the core of it. Say the answer immediately, then explain.

▲ 6

FAQ and Q&A schema really do help AI engines pick up your content.

Consistency matters more than raw frequency. For most small businesses, a sustainable, quality-focused schedule beats burning out trying to post daily. A practical baseline: 3–5 quality posts per week on your main platform, plus daily Stories/short-form if you have capacity. Choose one or two platforms where your customers actually are rather than spreading thin across all of them — for many Sri Lankan businesses that's Facebook and Instagram, with TikTok for younger audiences. Mix content types: value/educational posts, behind-the-scenes, customer results/testimonials, offers, and occasional direct promotion (follow roughly an 80% value / 20% promotion balance). Batch-create content weekly and schedule it to stay consistent. Track which posts drive engagement and enquiries, and do more of what works. Quality, consistency, and genuine engagement (replying to comments and messages) outperform high-volume low-effort posting every time.

▲ 8

Pick 1-2 platforms and do them well. Spreading thin helps no one.

▲ 5

Batching content weekly is the only way I stay consistent.

All three are capable; the best choice depends on your workflow, and many businesses use more than one. In general terms: ChatGPT (OpenAI) has the largest ecosystem, plugins, and custom GPTs, and is a strong all-rounder for content, coding, and analysis. Claude (Anthropic) is known for thoughtful long-form writing, handling large documents, careful reasoning, and a natural writing style — many prefer it for drafting and document work. Gemini (Google) integrates tightly with Google Workspace (Docs, Gmail, Sheets), which is convenient if your business runs on Google tools. For most small businesses, pick based on: which ecosystem you already use, the quality of writing/reasoning you need, and budget (all have free tiers and paid plans around USD 20/month). A practical approach is to try the free tiers on your real tasks for a week and see which fits your workflow best. Whichever you choose, always review AI output before it reaches customers.

▲ 10

I use Claude for writing and long docs, ChatGPT for quick coding help. Both have their strengths.

▲ 6

If your business lives in Google Workspace, Gemini's integration is genuinely handy.

For a serious business, Microsoft 365 (or Google Workspace) is usually worth it; for very light use, free tools may suffice. Free options — Google Docs/Sheets/Slides, or the free web versions of Office, or LibreOffice — handle basic documents at no cost. Microsoft 365 (around USD 6/user/month) adds: professional email on your domain, the full desktop apps, 1TB cloud storage per user, Teams for collaboration, advanced Excel features, and superior spam/security. The decision hinges on your needs: if you rely on advanced Excel, professional email, real-time team collaboration, or need everything integrated and supported, 365 pays for itself in productivity and professionalism. If you're a solo operator doing simple documents, the free tiers are genuinely fine. Many Sri Lankan SMEs land on Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 once they have staff and client-facing email needs. Factor in that both give you professional branded email, which alone justifies the cost for many.

▲ 6

Branded email + Teams alone justified 365 for our team.

▲ 5

Solo and simple? Google's free tier is genuinely enough to start.

Phishing tricks you into revealing passwords, card details, or approving payments by impersonating someone you trust. Warning signs: urgency and threats ('your account will be closed in 24 hours'), requests for passwords or OTPs (legitimate companies never ask), slightly-wrong sender addresses (support@paypa1.com), generic greetings, unexpected attachments, and links whose real destination (hover to check) differs from the text. Common Sri Lankan scams include fake bank SMS/emails, fake delivery notices, fake 'you've won' prizes, and business-email-compromise where a fake 'supplier' or 'boss' requests an urgent payment or bank-detail change. Defences: never click links in unexpected messages — go to the site directly; never share OTPs or passwords; verify payment or bank-detail changes by phoning a known number; enable 2FA so a stolen password isn't enough; and train staff, since one careless click can compromise a business. When unsure, slow down — urgency is the scammer's main weapon.

▲ 11

'Urgency is the scammer's main weapon' — exactly. Slow down and verify.

▲ 8

Business email compromise (fake supplier payment requests) is hitting SL companies hard. Always phone to verify.

#usb#external-drive#troubleshooting
✓ Accepted Answer

When a USB drive doesn't appear, work through these steps. Try a different USB port and, ideally, a different computer to isolate whether it's the drive or the port. On Windows, open Disk Management (right-click Start → Disk Management): if the drive appears there but has no drive letter, right-click and assign one; if it shows as 'Unallocated' or 'RAW', the partition or file system is damaged. In that case, recovery software can often retrieve files before you reformat. Update or reinstall USB drivers in Device Manager. Avoid unpowered USB hubs for drives that need more power. If the drive isn't detected anywhere and makes no sound/light, it may have failed physically. Important: if the drive holds important data and now asks you to 'format', don't format — run recovery software first. To prevent corruption, always 'safely eject' drives rather than yanking them out, which is a common cause in day-to-day use.

▲ 7

Disk Management is the first place to check — often just needs a drive letter.

▲ 5

Always safely eject. Pulling drives out mid-write corrupts them.

#website-speed#performance#seo
✓ Accepted Answer

Website speed affects both user experience and SEO ranking. Common causes and fixes: (1) Large unoptimised images — the biggest culprit; compress images and serve modern formats like WebP, which can cut image weight 70%+. (2) Cheap or distant hosting — upgrade to quality SSD hosting, ideally with a CDN so content loads from servers near your visitors. (3) Too many plugins/scripts — remove what you don't need. (4) No caching — enable browser and server caching so repeat visits load instantly. (5) Render-blocking CSS/JS — minify and defer non-critical scripts. (6) No lazy-loading — defer off-screen images so the page shows faster. Test your site with Google PageSpeed Insights and GTmetrix; they give specific, prioritised recommendations. Aim for a Largest Contentful Paint under 2.5 seconds. For Sri Lankan audiences, a CDN and image optimisation usually deliver the biggest gains. A fast site ranks better and converts more visitors — speed is a direct business advantage.

WebP images alone made my site dramatically faster. Easy win.

#windows-update#troubleshooting#windows
✓ Accepted Answer

Stuck or failing Windows Updates are common and usually fixable. First, give it time — some updates genuinely take a while, especially on slower connections or drives. If it's truly stuck (no disk activity for a long time or an error code): run the built-in Windows Update Troubleshooter (Settings → System → Troubleshoot). If that doesn't work, reset Update components: stop the Windows Update and BITS services, delete the contents of the SoftwareDistribution folder, then restart the services — this clears a corrupted update cache that causes most failures. Ensure you have enough free disk space (updates need several GB). Run 'sfc /scannow' and 'DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth' to repair system files. For a specific failing update, you can sometimes download it manually from the Microsoft Update Catalog. If a bad update caused problems, you can uninstall it. Keep at least 20GB free to avoid update issues.

▲ 8

Clearing SoftwareDistribution fixed my endlessly-failing update. Classic fix.

▲ 4

Free disk space matters — updates fail silently when the drive is full.

They serve different intents, and the best choice depends on your business — many use both. Google Ads (search) captures existing demand: people actively searching 'laptop repair Colombo' have intent to buy now, so search ads convert well for services and problems people look up. It's ideal when customers search for what you offer. Facebook/Meta Ads (Instagram included) create demand: they interrupt people browsing with visually engaging ads targeted by interests, behaviours, and demographics — excellent for brand awareness, products with visual appeal, and reaching people who aren't actively searching yet. A rule of thumb: if customers search for your service, prioritise Google; if you need to build awareness or sell visually-driven products, prioritise Meta. Budget-wise, Meta often has a lower cost to start and test. Many Sri Lankan businesses run Meta for awareness and Google for high-intent search, then shift budget toward whichever delivers a lower cost per lead. Test both, measure cost per result, and scale the winner.

▲ 9

Google for 'I need this now' searches, Meta for discovery. Both have their place.

▲ 5

Meta's cheaper to test when you're starting out. Then add Google for high-intent.

AI and automation can remove hours of repetitive work each week. Practical starting points: (1) Customer FAQs — a chatbot or WhatsApp Business auto-replies handle common questions 24/7. (2) Email/content drafting — AI tools draft replies, proposals, and social posts you then refine. (3) Appointment booking — automated scheduling tools remove back-and-forth. (4) Data entry and invoicing — automation tools (Zapier, Make) connect your apps so information flows automatically instead of manual copying. (5) Social media scheduling — batch and auto-post content. (6) Lead follow-up — automated sequences ensure no enquiry is forgotten. Start by listing tasks you do repeatedly every week, then automate the highest-time, lowest-judgement ones first. Keep a human in the loop for anything customer-facing or requiring judgement. The goal isn't to replace people but to free them from drudgery so they focus on work that grows the business. IT BOY builds custom automation solutions for Sri Lankan businesses.

#mobile#responsive#design
✓ Accepted Answer

A mobile-friendly (responsive) website is essential because the majority of web traffic in Sri Lanka and worldwide now comes from phones. Reasons it matters: (1) User experience — visitors leave sites that are hard to read or navigate on mobile, losing you customers. (2) Google ranking — Google uses mobile-first indexing, meaning it primarily judges your site by its mobile version; a poor mobile site hurts your search ranking directly. (3) Conversions — most people research and contact businesses from their phones, so if your contact form, phone number, or WhatsApp button is hard to tap, you lose leads. (4) Credibility — a site that breaks on mobile looks unprofessional. A responsive design automatically adapts layout, text size, and buttons to any screen. Test yours on real phones and with Google's Mobile-Friendly Test. If your current site isn't responsive, that's a priority fix — it affects both traffic and revenue. Every site IT BOY builds is mobile-first by default.

Mobile-first indexing means Google literally judges your mobile site first. Big deal.

Make sure the WhatsApp/call buttons are easy to tap. That's where leads come from.

#ransomware#backup#business
✓ Accepted Answer

Ransomware is malware that encrypts your files and demands payment for the decryption key — it can shut a business down overnight. Protection is layered: (1) Backups are your ultimate safety net — maintain automated, versioned backups with at least one copy offline or immutable (so ransomware can't encrypt your backups too). Test restores regularly. (2) Keep systems updated — ransomware often exploits known, unpatched vulnerabilities. (3) Endpoint protection with ransomware-specific defences (Bitdefender, ESET, Sophos). (4) Email security and staff training — most ransomware arrives via phishing emails and malicious attachments. (5) Limit user permissions so a single infected account can't encrypt everything. (6) Network segmentation to contain spread. If you're hit: disconnect the device immediately to stop spread, don't pay (payment funds crime and doesn't guarantee recovery), and consult professionals — some ransomware is decryptable. The businesses that recover fastest are those with tested offline backups. Prevention and backups together are far cheaper than a ransom or downtime.

▲ 12

Offline/immutable backups are THE defence. If ransomware can reach your backups, they're useless.

Never pay. No guarantee of recovery and it funds more attacks. Get professional help.

#cloud#migration#business
✓ Accepted Answer

For most businesses, moving suitable systems to the cloud brings real benefits, though the right mix depends on your needs. Benefits: (1) Access anywhere — staff work from any location or device, which proved essential in recent years. (2) Lower upfront cost — pay monthly instead of buying and maintaining expensive servers. (3) Automatic backups and redundancy — reputable cloud providers replicate data across locations. (4) Scalability — add users or storage instantly as you grow. (5) Automatic updates and security handled by the provider. (6) Collaboration — real-time shared documents and communication. Common first steps: move email and documents to Google Workspace or Microsoft 365; move file storage to cloud or a hybrid NAS-plus-cloud setup; use cloud accounting software. Considerations: you need reliable internet (a real factor in parts of Sri Lanka, so keep a backup connection), and sensitive data needs proper access controls. A hybrid approach — some local, some cloud — often suits SMEs best. IT BOY plans and manages cloud migrations for Sri Lankan businesses.

Cloud email + docs was our easiest, highest-value first move.

#maintenance#business#preventive
✓ Accepted Answer

Preventive IT maintenance is far cheaper than emergency repairs and downtime. A practical business checklist: Weekly — verify backups actually completed and are restorable; install critical security updates; monitor storage space. Monthly — full malware scans; update all software, drivers, and firmware; review user accounts and remove ex-staff access; clean dust from desktops/servers; test the UPS. Quarterly — review security (passwords, 2FA, permissions); test a full backup restore; check disk health (SMART status) to catch failing drives before they die; review software licenses. Annually — internal cleaning of all machines (essential in Sri Lanka's dust and humidity); replace ageing hardware proactively; review your whole IT setup against business needs; refresh disaster-recovery plans. Also maintain documentation of your systems, passwords (in a manager), and network layout. Many businesses outsource this to a managed IT provider on a monthly plan, which ensures nothing is forgotten and problems are caught early. IT BOY offers monthly IT maintenance and outsourcing plans across Colombo and Maharagama.

▲ 10

Testing backup RESTORES quarterly is the step everyone skips until disaster hits.

▲ 6

A monthly managed plan means we stopped having 'surprise' IT emergencies.
